Economic/Human Considerations

Habitat
Summer = alpine tundra at high elevations, winter = lower slopes.

Distribution

Ecozones

Taiga Cordillera, Taiga Plains, Boreal Cordillera

Distribution

12% of the NWT.
Score:
F = 2
References:

Number of Occurrences

DNA fingerprinting project with University of Alberta to identify 'populations' or herds in the Mackenzie Mountains (H111). Sheep in discrete mountain blocks can be treated as 'populations' but the DNA work will conclude (H111 citing Norm Simmons) Mackenzie is one population, Richardson is another.

Historical Distribution

Dall's sheep distribution today is likely similar to the past.

Population

Population Size

14,000-26,000 in Mackenzie Mountains (1998 estimate, no new estimate; H111). In Richardson Mountains less than 500 in 2014 (H297); was 700 in 2006 (R173), 1,500 in 1997 (H110; R172 ). So NWT total of 14,500 to 26,500.
Score:
F = 1

Density

Depending on quality of habitat, can range from 20 to 100 sheep per 100 sq.km. (R093), not usually over 55 per 100 sq km. Only get 100 per 100 sq km in areas like Kluane National Park (H110, H111)

Threats

Threats

Disease (pneumonia-lungworm complex), human disturbance, slow to colonize new areas, potential over harvest (R093,P094). Should closely monitor effects of harvest when very age/sex selective (H111). Documented deaths due to lungworm-pneumonia for first time in 1999 (H111). Lots of aircraft disturbance near Norman Wells (H216). Harsh weather events and climate change are potential threats (H298).

Intrinsic Vulnerability

Exploration (sheep very sensitive to noise) (P094); pay close attention to southern range for oil and gas development (H110).
