The Inuvialuit Regional Corporation and Government of the Northwest Territories Intergovernmental Agreement on Programs and Services Cooperation and Coordination recognizes the importance of the government-to-government relationship between the GNWT and IRC.
The meeting in Inuvik focused on the following areas:
Premier McLeod and Chair and CEO Smith agreed today’s meeting was very productive, characterized by informative discussions on a wide range of topics from education to Offshore Revenue Negotiations. Both parties look forward to continuing this ongoing dialogue as per the signed MOU.
Formalizing relationships through regular bilateral meetings is a key part of the 18th Legislative Assembly’s new approach to building partnerships with Aboriginal governments, through a spirit of respect, recognition and responsibility.
This new relationship provides both governments an opportunity to have more productive meetings by having an agenda and shared common briefing notes shared in advance of the meetings and commits both governments to meet at least once a year. The meeting is also structured to produce outcomes and timely deliverables.
