Tri-Party Memorandum of Understanding Signed in Support of NWT Community Governments

YELLOWKNIFE (May 17, 2016) The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), NWT Association of Communities (NWTAC),  and the Local Government Administrators of the NWT (LGANT), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) designed to improve collaborative support for community governments in the Northwest Territories.

The MOU was an outcome of meetings held in conjunction with NWTAC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) from May 5-8, 2016.  This year’s AGM marked the 50th anniversary of the NWTAC. The objective of the MOU is to strengthen partnerships through shared understanding of the mandates, roles, and responsibilities of the three organizations as they work together to support and strengthen community governments. The MOU commits the partners to a collaborative process when addressing the challenges related to developing best practices in community governance.

  • Areas of common interest for the partner organizations identified in the MOU include: advocacy and promotion of community governance/governments, member services, professional development and training, shared advice, communications, accountability and responsibility, technical support and advice, and leadership of collaboration between organizations.
  • The MOU also covers a process for collaboration on areas of common interest as well as a process for resolving conflicts.
  • Ministers Robert C. McLeod, Glen Abernethy, Caroline Cochrane, Wally Schumann and Louis Sebert participated in an open discussion May 7th as part of the NWTAC AGM.
