The Government of the Northwest Territories is pleased to welcome fire management directors from across Canada to Yellowknife for the 2020 meeting of the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) Management Committee.

CIFFC is a not-for-profit corporation owned and operated by federal, provincial and territorial wildfire management agencies in Canada, which coordinates wildfire cooperation and resource-sharing nationally and internationally.

Each year, CIFFC hosts a meeting for representatives from member agencies to reflect on the past fire season, discuss emerging fire management issues and ensure preparations for the upcoming fire season are on track. This year’s meeting will take place February 4-5, 2020, in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (NWT).

In 2019-2020, the NWT sent fire personnel to several provinces and Australia to assist with their firefighting efforts. The NWT also received personnel from several provinces to support firefighting efforts in the north.

The coordination of this support was made possible through CIFFC. National standards allow for the smooth mobilization of resources across the country and internationally by ensuring each agency follows the same procedures. We are grateful for CIFFC’s role in wildfire management in the NWT and look forward to continuing to improve and expand coordination with our colleagues across Canada.
