Frank Channel Bridge Rehabilitation

YELLOWKNIFE (January 25, 2017) – Starting on or about May 1, 2017  the Department of Transportation (DOT) will be undertaking a major rehabilitation of the Frank Channel Bridge, located at km 243.8 on the Yellowknife Highway (Highway 3).

The bridge is the only crossing over the Frank Channel, meaning work will continue as traffic passes, with controlled delays.  Construction will take place between May and October each year of 2017 and 2018.

Government of the Northwest Territories purchases assets of NTCL

YELLOWKNIFE (DECEMBER 16, 2016) — Minister of Finance Robert C. McLeod confirmed today that the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has purchased the assets of Northern Transportation Company Limited (NTCL) for $7.5 million. This timely action has been taken to protect the petroleum product supply chain  for NWT communities along the Mackenzie River and Arctic coast.

Reliable and dependable barging services are a lifeline for many remote NWT communities and industries that do not have other options for obtaining fuel and other goods economically.

Thank you for meeting with the Government of the Northwest Territories this afternoon.

We are in Ottawa this week to speak with the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers and Standing Committees about some of the most significant challenges facing the people of the Northwest Territories today.

Before we get to that presentation, I would like to take a few minutes to talk a little bit about our territory.

Community sustainability is a huge challenge for the people of the Northwest Territories.

Public Notice: National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims

YELLOWKNIFE (November 16, 2016) – November 16 is the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims in Canada.  Since 2007, citizens, support groups and road and safety officials have joined together on this day across Canada to remember crash victims, and to recognize that ‘safe driving saves lives.’

According to the 2014 Transport Canada statistics, on average, five people die on Canada’s roads each day.  Almost 1,900 people are killed each year, and nearly 149,000 are injured.

Wally Schumann: Economic Potential of the Yellowknife Airport

Mr. Speaker, today I would like to provide an overview of the Department of Transportation’s efforts to capture economic opportunities at the Yellowknife Airport.

The Department is taking steps to make the Yellowknife Airport financially self-sufficient. By running the Airport more like a business, we will be able to make capital improvements, create jobs, and explore opportunities to drive economic growth across the territory.

Wally Schumann: Climate Change and Transportation Infrastructure

Mr. Speaker, I would like to provide an update on the Department of Transportation’s research and development activities into adapting our transportation infrastructure to the effects of climate change. Increasing our knowledge and better understanding how climate change affects infrastructure is the first step in developing adaptation strategies. The scientific information gathered through climate change research has already made a difference in northern infrastructure planning, design, construction and maintenance and will be a game-changer in the future. 

Wally Schumann: Private and Public Partnerships

Mr. Speaker, the Department of Transportation is committed to working with public and private sector partners to continue to improve transportation infrastructure across the Northwest Territories under the Mandate of the 18th Legislative Assembly.

Our government strongly believes in working collaboratively with various levels of government, from Aboriginal and municipal authorities to the federal government, as well as with our private sector partners.
