Ministers' Statements and Speeches

Aboriginal Policing Program Opportunities

May 25, 2012 - Mr. Speaker, I wish to update the Assembly on programs that give our Aboriginal youth a stepping stone to serving their communities in the RCMP.

Our Assembly has identified a goal of diversifying our economy, ensuring that people in each community and region have choices.  The Aboriginal Community Constable Program and the Aboriginal Pre-Cadet Training Program are innovative training programs that support this goal.

Improving the Parks Experience

May 25, 2012 - Mr. Speaker, Northwest Territories parks and campgrounds attract thousands of visitors to our Territory every summer.  They are a vital element of our tourism sector – and one we continue to invest in heavily by ensuring they are maintained, improved, and made more accessible to visitors.  These facilities are also enjoyed by our own residents and contribute enormously to the quality of life that we enjoy here in Canada’s North.

New Public Housing Rent Scale

May 25, 2012 - Mr. Speaker, the Housing Corporation is committed to implementing a fair and sustainable public housing rent scale. It is one of the strategic actions outlined in Building for the Future: Northern Solutions for Northern Housing. It was also identified as a key component of the 17th Legislative Assembly’s priority to address housing needs.

Minister Ramsay's Welcoming Address - 2012 PNWER Arctic Caucus and Capital Visit

Before we get the day's sessions started, I would like to express how much of an honour it is to once again be in Whitehorse – the home of both the Kwanlin Dun and the Ta’an Kwach’an First Nations.

It would be most appropriate to have a welcome prayer performed by a local First Nation elder. I would like to introduce Ms. Annie Smith, a member of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation to perform a prayer.

I am pleased to be here to give you a quick snapshot of the Northwest Territories and share some of what makes us unique in Canada and in the world.

The Northwest Territories has a population of just over 43,000 people living in an area of over 1.3 million square kilometers - That’s bigger than the area of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan combined.

Minister Ramsay's speech, Northern Air Transport Association’s 36th Annual General Meeting

(check against delivery)

April 18, 2012 - I appreciate this opportunity to address the Northern Air Transport Association’s 36th Annual General Meeting. Aviation is an important industry in the North, one that requires a continuous dialogue between regulators, airport operators, and the aviation industry. Thank you for providing that forum – we all benefit from continuing our conversation.
