Mr. Speaker, I rise today to share the progress we have made in strengthening our mental health support services. Our focus is on the pressing issue of suicide prevention, as well as our ongoing efforts to enhance the Mental Wellness and Addictions Recovery system.

Mr. Speaker, this Legislative Assembly has made it a priority to advance universal child care for residents of the Northwest Territories. In December 2021, we signed the Canada-NWT Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, and since then we have worked closely with licensed early learning and child care programs and early childhood educators to advance this mandate.

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to stand today and announce the appointment of Mr. Rick Hunt as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission, effective yesterday October 2, 2023. This morning I met with Mr. Hunt and officially welcomed him to the position.

Mr. Speaker, the regulations for the Northwest Territories Mineral Resources Act define the first made-in-the-NWT approach to governing mineral development. That is not the only thing that makes them historic, they are the first legal instrument to be developed in their entirety, under the Legislative Development Protocol set out by the Northwest Territories Intergovernmental Agreement on Lands and Resources Management. Last Friday, I tabled a report highlighting the status and success of the Intergovernmental Council’s collaborative process.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to speak about this summer’s devastating wildfire season that affected a majority of Northwest Territories residents. Territorial emergencies began in May and ended in September and saw a total of 12 communities impacted and roughly 70% of all NWT residents evacuated from their communities.

Mr. Speaker, throughout this term, departments across the Government of the Northwest Territories have been working towards our mandate commitment to enable Seniors to age in place with dignity.

Mr. Speaker, Housing NWT has been very successful in building strong partnerships with Indigenous governments over the life of this government, because we have cultivated collaborative relationships with them. This is particularly important with the large amounts of distinctions-based funding that flows directly from the Government of Canada to NWT Indigenous governments for their housing priorities.

Mr. Speaker, today I would like to recognize this year’s historic wildfire season, the challenges faced by so many NWT residents and others across Canada, and the heroic efforts of firefighters and emergency management personnel to protect our communities.
