June 7, 2012 - Mr. Speaker.  The new public housing rent scale is scheduled to be implemented on July 1, 2012. We recognize the changes we are making are significant and there will be an adjustment period for all tenants.

As you know, there have been concerns expressed about the impact of the changes on Seniors who reside without others in the house and often live on fixed income. These Seniors have been paying $0 rent under the old rent scale, but were to pay between $70 - $80 minimum rent using the new rent scale.

May 30, 2012 - The strategic framework Building for the Future: Northern Solutions for Northern Housing, released on April 16, 2012, outlines the direction that the Housing Corporation will be taking in delivering housing programs and services to NWT residents.

May 25, 2012 - Mr. Speaker, the Housing Corporation is committed to implementing a fair and sustainable public housing rent scale. It is one of the strategic actions outlined in Building for the Future: Northern Solutions for Northern Housing. It was also identified as a key component of the 17^th Legislative Assembly’s priority to address housing needs.

February 16, 2012 - Mr. Speaker, I rise today to provide an update on the Shelter Policy Review which began during the last Legislative Assembly and is now almost finished. The Shelter Policy Review was a broad based examination of housing in the Northwest Territories and was intended to provide a long-term strategic framework for housing.

Improving housing conditions is one of the key priorities of the 17^th Legislative Assembly, and completing and implementing the Shelter Policy Review was identified as a key component of advancing this priority.

February 10, 2012 - Mr. Speaker, for the past number of years the Yellowknife Homelessness Coalition has been working on Betty House, which is an initiative to build and operate a transitional house for women and children that are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless.  Betty House will help these women and children to stabilize, to move forward, and to make positive life choices.

YELLOWKNIFE (Feb. 10, 2012) –  The Northwest Territories Housing Corporation (NWTHC) is pleased to announce today that it will be providing $2.3 million toward the construction of transitional housing for single women and women with children. This contribution to the Yellowknife Homelessness Coalition and YWCA Yellowknife for the construction of this housing project supports a critical shelter need in the NWT.

December 7, 2011 - Mr. Speaker,  I rise today to inform Members that the Housing Corporation will be offering a one-time temporary moratorium on evictions for public housing clients with arrears.

September 28, 2011 - Premier Floyd K. Roland has accepted the resignation of Jeff Polakoff as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation (NWTHC).

Mr. Polakoff joined the NWTHC as President and CEO in June 2006, moving to the position of Deputy Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs in June 2008 before returning to the NWTHC in August 2009.
