Thank you, I’m pleased to speak to you tonight on behalf of Premier McLeod and the Government of the Northwest Territories.

This is Drowning Prevention Week in Canada. Residents and visitors are urged to practice water safety while boating, fishing and swimming in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Yellowknife (July 17, 2013) – Minister of Health and Social Services Tom Beaulieu has announced the launch of a website that will provide updates on the mid-life retrofit currently being planned for the Stanton Territorial Hospital. Conceptual plans for the proposed renewal will be available from the website by the fall.

Minister Beaulieu says the process was started three years ago and work has now moved to the final planning stages.  “The planning study will tell us what is needed and what we’re looking at in terms of project scope and costs,” he said.

Yellowknife (July 11, 2013) – The Department of Health and Social Services has made the decision to not renew the contract with the Nats’ejee Keh Treatment Centre for the delivery of addictions treatment programs when the current contract expires on September 30, 2013.

(June 6, 2013) - Mr. Speaker, our government is committed to this Assembly’s goal of helping our residents become and stay healthy, educated people free from poverty. A strong territory needs a strong society. All residents of the NWT should have the chance to enjoy the benefits of living in a prosperous, well-governed territory and to participate fully in a healthy, just society.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 6, 2013) –  A renewed Early Childhood Development Framework from the Departments of Education, Culture and Employment and Health and Social Services will give NWT children the right start by focusing on the important early years from prenatal to age five.  The departments collaborated on renewing the original 2001 Framework, incorporating new research, emerging information, best practices and techniques that reflect the most effective approaches to early childhood development.

(June 5, 2013) - Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to be joining my colleague, the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, in tabling Right from the Start: A Framework for Early Childhood Development in the NWT later today. This Framework not only responds to the priorities of this Legislative Assembly, it also answers concerns that are top of mind for the people of the Northwest Territories.

(June 3, 2013) - Mr. Speaker, we all know the terrible toll that addictions take on our people and our communities.  Widespread addictions are one of the biggest barriers to achieving the vision and priorities of this Assembly – it is a driving force behind family breakdown, incarceration, homelessness, and developmental delays in children.

As a government, we have invested millions of dollars into tackling this issue, and commissioned numerous reports but we haven’t seen much improvement.

YELLOWKNIFE (May 30, 2013) – Safe Kids Week is May 27 to June 3 in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is marking the Week by encouraging NWT residents to show that they have the helmet habit and post a video or picture of themselves wearing a properly fitting helmet online.
