Revised Business Incentive Policy

October 19, 2010 - Today, the Minister of Industry, Tourism, and Investment Bob McLeod was pleased to report that the Government of the Northwest Territories has revised the Business Incentive Policy after two years of consultations with Members of the Legislative Assembly, the Northwest Territories business community, Aboriginal governments and other interested parties.

Foundation for Change

October 19, 2010 - The Minister of Health and Social Services Sandy Lee provided Members of the Legislative Assembly with an update today on ‘A Foundation for Change.'


Mr. Speaker, I have often spoken about the importance of making careful change within the Health and Social Services System. Our 2009 to 2012 Action Plan, ‘A Foundation for Change’, provides the foundation for this careful change.

Family Violence

October 18, 2010 - Today, the Minister of Health and Social services highlighted two initiatives that the Department of Health and Social Services has spearheaded with the Coalition Against Family Violence as part of the NWT Family Violence Action Plan Phase II.


Mr. Speaker, family violence is a deliberate use of force to control another person. Abusers do not just lose their tempers or simply have problems with anger management. They choose to hurt and control their victims.

October 18, 2010 - The Minister of Education, Culture and Employment Jackson Lafferty was pleased to share news today about its Aboriginal Student Achievement initiative that focuses on increasing the accomplishments of Aboriginal students across the Northwest Territories.

Recognition of Small Business Week

October 18, 2010 - Today marks the start of Small Business Week, and the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment took the opportunity today to recognize and celebrate the entrepreneurs and their businesses across the Northwest Territories.


Mr. Speaker, this is Small Business Week, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate entrepreneurs and their businesses across the Northwest Territories. I would also like to recognize Co-op Week and the 16 cooperatives that serve residents in the Northwest Territories.

Devolution

October 18, 2010 - The Premier of the Northwest Territories, Floyd K. Roland, provided NWT residents with an update on the progress that the Government of the Northwest Territories has made on devolution in the recent months.


Mr. Speaker, the Devolution of decision-making authorities over public lands and water from Canada to the Northwest Territories has been a matter of debate and negotiation for much of my lifetime.

Fiscal and Economic Update

October 15, 2010 - Minister of Finance, J. Michael Miltenberger, provided a fiscal and economic update to Members of the Legislative Assembly today.


Mr. Speaker, two years ago the world economy experienced a downturn unprecedented since the Great Depression.  The turmoil touched everyone, including Canada.  The NWT economy shrank in 2009.  Employment fell by 5.2 per cent and mineral exploration by 80 per cent.
