CanNor is a valued partner in many of our economic development investments in the NWT – we are happy to see this recognized in the federal budget; and to know that core funding will be extended in 2018‐19 and beyond.

Yesterday afternoon – I spoke about the NWT difference.  It is one that I believe personifies the potential and uniqueness of Canada’s North.

Thank you for coming – and for your interest in the NWT.  We recognize that competition for exploration and development dollars is strong.

It begs the question - how does the NWT expect to compete?  The answer to that question comes down to what we are calling the “NWT Difference”.

To understand our unique edge on mineral exploration and development, you first need to know two things.

The first thing you need to know is that the NWT has an extraordinary wealth of resources.

Mr. Speaker, nearly $1 billion of our economy comes from mining and exploration.  It is the primary generator of wealth in the Northwest Territories and the reason why our government has made the commitment in its mandate to support this sector.

Mr. Speaker, the francophone community is a vibrant part of the multicultural mosaic of the Northwest Territories. As we move into the 20^th Rendez-vous de la Francophonie, from March 1^st to 21^st, we have some milestones to mark and events to celebrate.

Mr. Speaker, the Government of the Northwest Territories has made a commitment to support the Intergovernmental Council towards implementation of the vision of cooperative and collaborative management of lands and resources, as set out in the Lands and Resources Devolution Agreement.I am pleased to report that the Fourth Annual Meeting of the Intergovernmental Council on Land and Resource Management took place on Friday, December 15^th, 2017 here in Yellowknife.

Mr. Speaker, the Northwest Territories is just a bit different.

Just a bit different is the tagline of NWT Tourism’s new marketing campaign. It capitalizes on the unique northern realities that make our territory a special and spectacular travel destination.

As we continue to build our territory’s tourism industry, the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment is investing to maximize the economic growth and diversity that this sector can provide.

Mr. Speaker, today is national Pink Shirt Day. Wearing pink today symbolizes that we, as a society, will not tolerate bullying of any kind. This day of recognition and action was started in 2007 by two young men in Nova Scotia, David Sheppard and Travis Price. As an act of protest and support, they gave pink shirts to their fellow students, after a grade 9 student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school.

Mr. Speaker, on April 1, 2018, the minimum wage in the Northwest Territories will increase from $12.50 to $13.46 per hour, the third highest minimum wage in Canada.

Mr. Speaker, one of our government’s mandate commitments is to implement online delivery of a community government training curriculum to build the capacity of community governments. I would like to inform Members about the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs’ progress in the development and implementation of web-based training opportunities for community governments.
