Thank you for joining us today to learn about the Northwest Territories and some of the new developments in Indigenous relations and governance that are taking place there that we believe might be of interest to people across Canada.

Reconciliation and improved outcomes for Indigenous people are prominent themes in the national conversation these days and priorities for policy makers across the country.

As a Métis person and Premier of a territory where approximately half of the people are Indigenous, this new focus on Indigenous issues and priorities pleases me.

I am here today to bring to your attention the Government of the Northwest Territories concerns with Bill C-55 – An Act to amend the Oceans Act and the Petroleum Resources Act. 

Good evening and welcome to the NWT Max Awards. It is an honour to be here to celebrate the NWT & Nunavut’s Chamber of Mines’ 50^th anniversary with the inaugural Max Award event that celebrates excellence in mining and exploration.

Good morning. It’s a pleasure to be here today for this historic event, and the realization of the dream Former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker had to connect our nation from coast to coast to coast.

Thank you to her Excellency the Right Honourable Governor General Julie Payette, for being here to celebrate with us today, and to Ministers Amarjeet Sohi and Carolyn Bennett. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Canada.

Good afternoon, and welcome to the opening ceremonies of the Inuvik Tuktoyaktuk highway. I would like to say thank you to her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Minister Amarjeet Sohi and Minister Carolyn Bennett for joining us in this celebration.

I am pleased to be here today to celebrate the opening of this engineering marvel, which is the result of active participation and cooperation with the Government of Canada, the communities, and the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation.

Good morning. It’s a pleasure to be here today to celebrate a vision that began in the 1960’s and has become a reality today.  I want to thank Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette and Federal Ministers Amarjeet Sohi and Carolyn Bennett for joining us in this celebration.

This is an important day for the Northwest Territories and Canada. Today marks the opening of the first highway to connect our nation by road from sea to sea to sea and creates a northern transportation corridor that makes access to tidewater on the Arctic Ocean a reality.

It is great to be here at the 45th annual Geoscience Forum and to see how much this event has grown over the years. I would like to recognize the Northwest Territories (NWT) and Nunavut Chamber of Mines and staff of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment for organizing this important event each year and for the invitation to speak here tonight.

Good morning. Thank you for the opportunity to speak today about the importance of infrastructure investment to the growth of the Northwest Territories.

The Government of the Northwest Territories, or the GNWT, has recognized the opportunities public-private partnerships (P3s) can bring to help the government address its current infrastructure deficit, which is currently around $3 billion, and other key strategic infrastructure projects that would help stimulate our economy and improve services to our residents.

Madame Chair, members of the Committee, thank you for the opportunity to present to you today in relation to your study of modern treaties and self-government throughout Canada.

The Government of the Northwest Territories has made it a priority to advance, finalize and implement land, resources and self-government agreements, including post-devolution initiatives.

We appreciate this opportunity to participate in your Committee’s study and hope that it will contribute to continued progress on this important initiative for the people of the Northwest Territories.
