Mr. Speaker, the Department of Lands takes its responsibility to administer and manage public lands in the Northwest Territories seriously. That is why over the summer, the Department engaged with Indigenous governments, stakeholders and the public on potential changes to the Northwest Territories Lands Act and the Commissioner’s Land Act. This input will, for the first time, allow for a made-in-the- North approach to managing land in the Northwest Territories.

Mr. Speaker, our residents have demonstrated that cannabis is an important issue for them. Since I last spoke of the legalization of cannabis in May, our government has been hard at work undertaking an extensive engagement program with the public and stakeholders to make sure we understand the views of Northerners.

Mr. Speaker, as we begin the final sitting of the Second Session of the Legislative Assembly, many people are looking back at the past two years and our mandate successes. We have many successes to look at and we will discuss them in more detail during this sitting. Right now, I want to look in a different direction, Mr. Speaker. Today, I want to talk about the future of the North.

Good afternoon. It is a pleasure to be here today, joined by colleagues, neighbouring governments and community leaders from all across Western Canada. This conference is an important one as it brings our jurisdictions together for focused discussions on ways we can work together to achieve greater economic prosperity.

Welcome everyone. I am happy to be here this afternoon with Yukon Premier Sandy Silver and Nunavut Premier Peter Taptuna.

As the leaders of three territories that share in a unified vision for the North, our meetings today have provided us an opportunity to discuss how we can move forward to create the North our residents deserve.
