YELLOWKNIFE (October 11, 2012) – Individuals from fire departments across the NWT work tirelessly to protect our communities. The NWT Fire Service Merit Awards, announced by Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, recognizes those individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty while protecting residents across the territory.
“Fire fighters provide an essential service in all communities across the NWT, and in many cases they put themselves at risk to protect residents and their homes,” said Minister McLeod. “Many firefighters volunteer their time to not only fight fires in our communities but also to educate residents on fire prevention and safety. These awards help recognize those important contributions.”
NWT Fire Service Merit Awards are given out each year during national Fire Prevention Week, based on nominations from community members and fire chiefs, to honour and recognize individuals and community fire departments for their significant contribution to fire safety and fire service across the territory.
The 2012 award recipients are:
- Noela Cockney- Tuktoyaktuk Fire Department
- Roger Pilling - Fort Simpson Fire Department
- Paul Currie - Fort Smith Fire Department
- Jason Panter- Fort Smith Fire Department
- Ross Potter- Hay River Fire Department
Recognizing the contributions and achievements of fire fighters is an important part of promoting and recognizing the NWT fire service which provide vital education and protection services that contribute to sustainable, vibrant, and safe communities as outlined in the 17th Assembly’s vision of Believing in People and Building on the Strengths of Northerners.
