June 3, 2011 - A new, larger and more-modern facility is now open for visitors at the NWT/Alberta border. The 60th Parallel Visitors Centre provides a variety of ways to learn about tourism possibilities within the NWT, including interactive digital displays and arts and crafts exhibits.
“Our northern communities are what make our territory truly special” said Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, (ITI) Bob McLeod, to attendees of the grand opening. “I believe the improvements made and the information provided at the 60th Parallel Visitors Centre will attract tourists to these unique northern destinations.”
The Centre is located on the NWT/Alberta border on Highway #1 and is coupled with a new, colourful sign, welcoming visitors to the territory. It is intended to highlight the culture, language, and geography of the NWT, particularly encouraging travellers to visit smaller northern communities.
“Our Industry is pleased with this gateway visitor centre that will welcome visitors to all our communities” said Ms. Jenni Bruce, Chair of Northwest Territories Tourism. “We will work with ITI to ensure the information here entices visitors to explore more of our Spectacular NWT.”
Through its support of the tourism sector, the GNWT is working to diversify the economy and provide all communities and regions with opportunities and choices as envisioned in the 16th Legislative Assembly’s Northerners Working Together plan.
