FORT RESOLUTION, NWT (February 28, 2014) – A forest management agreement (FMA), signed today by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources J. Michael Miltenberger and Timberworks Inc. Secretary/Treasurer Raymond King and Board Member Leonard Beaulieu, will provide business, employment and training opportunities in the forest industry for residents of Fort Resolution.

Timberworks Inc. was established by the Deninu Kue First Nation and the Fort Resolution Métis Council. As the FMA holder, Timberworks will have non-exclusive access rights to harvest time from Crown lands in a prescribed area for sustainable business development and growth.

“The FMA provides Timberworks with tenure for enough timber volume and access to create a viable forest industry for the community of Fort Resolution,” said Minister Miltenberger. “The Government of the Northwest Territories will provide the guidance on timber harvest planning and business planning to help the community meet this goal.”

Under the agreement, Timberworks will be responsible for preparing timber harvest plans, participating in mid-term and short-term operating plans, making wood available for appropriate uses, building local capacity in the forest business and complying with forest legislation and other applicable laws.

The term of the Timberworks Inc. FMA is 25 years.
