YELLOWKNIFE (March 29, 2012) – Dr. André Corriveau will assume responsibility as Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) for the Northwest Territories effective June 2012. He was appointed by Health and Social Services Minister Tom Beaulieu.

Dr. Corriveau was previously the Chief Medical Officer of Health in Alberta and also served as Chief Public Health Officer for the Northwest Territories from 1998 to 2009. Dr. Corriveau will also continue to serve as provincial-territorial co-chair of the Public Health Network.

“The NWT will benefit greatly from his extensive previous northern experience in public health services, as well as the knowledge and networks he acquired through his position with the Government of Alberta and in his capacity as provincial-territorial co-chair of the Public Health Network,” said Minister Beaulieu. “I would also like to thank Dr. Kami Kandola for filling in as Acting Chief Public Health Officer.”

“I am excited to come back to work in the NWT and am looking forward to using my knowledge and experience to serve the needs of the NWT residents and help improve their overall health,” said Dr. Corriveau.

Dr. Kandola, who provided Acting CPHO coverage, will return to her former responsibility as Deputy Chief Public Health Officer.
