March 17, 2011 - A special group of volunteers today celebrated their third anniversary of service to travellers arriving at the Yellowknife Airport. The Arctic Ambassadors, who are sponsored by the NWT Seniors Society, greet travellers at the airport offering information, advice, and a helping hand.
“The Arctic Ambassadors represent the very best in northern hospitality,” said Michael McLeod, Minister of Transportation. “Many travellers have benefitted from the service of these community-minded people, and I want to acknowledge them and thank them for their service.”
The Program Coordinator for the NWT Seniors Society, Ms. Yvonne Quick, says the program gives the Ambassadors an opportunity to greet old friends and make new ones. "We have some excellent people involved who are committed to this program," she said. "They love to do it because they know it makes a difference."
The Ambassadors were honoured for their service at a noon luncheon held today at the Baker Centre. There are currently nineteen active Ambassadors. True to their dedication to service, two Ambassadors were back at the airport after their luncheon, ready to greet the afternoon flights.
