Business and Economic Development Officers build skills and knowledge

YELLOWKNIFE (February 5, 2016) — Economic Development program and service personnel from the Tlicho Government and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) took some important time last week to improve upon the breadth of tools, knowledge and ways in which they can support and advance economic development in their communities.

A two-day workshop - facilitated by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) —saw 13 business, economic and government service officers from Yellowknife, Behchokǫ̀, Gamètì, Wekweètì Whatì and Łutselk’e receive valuable information on programs, services, and available funding sources that they can apply across economic sectors and throughout the North Slave Region.

“Economic investment is realized in many forms,” says Minister of ITI Bob McLeod. “The goal of workshops like this is to invest in the knowledge and capacity of our frontline - and to equip them with the latest, best information to connect existing and prospective business-owners to the resources that will help them succeed.”

Business and economic development officers offer an important first point of contact for NWT residents hoping to access and learn more about the suite of training and funding supports provided by ITI.

Speakers and presenters at last week’s workshop were drawn from subject matter experts and officials from the GNWT and Tlicho governments as well as the private sector.

The GNWT’s Economic Opportunities Strategy highlights the importance of having government business programs managed by individuals that both understand, and are familiar with the communities and economic environments in which they are being delivered.

ITI’s ongoing efforts to support regional economic development and small business growth continue this week with a public workshop in Łutselk’e highlighting the many incentives, programs and services available to NWT residents.
