Corrections Northern Recruit Training Program Graduation

Communiqués de presse

November 25, 2011 - Today, twelve northerners are ready to take their places in the workforce as they graduate from the Corrections Northern Recruit Training Program.

This six-week program gives NWT residents the technical and theoretical skills required to be successful in the Corrections Service.

“While many of the graduates are successful in obtaining positions within the GNWT, that isn’t the only place they can work,” said Minister of Justice, Glen Abernethy. “Today’s graduates will be ready for entry-level positions in our correctional facilities or security-oriented positions anywhere in the North. We are proud to build a trained Northern workforce.”

The program was developed in 2009 because the Corrections Service faced significant challenges recruiting northerners with the basic qualifications to work in the corrections field. Successful graduates will continue to the final part of their program: paid casual staff positions that include a workplace orientation where they obtain direct on-the-job experience.  They will then have the skills and training to apply for permanent positions at youth or adult correctional facilities in the NWT or follow their own alternate career aspirations.

To date, 64 people have graduated from the Corrections Northern Recruit Training Program, and interest remains high.  Graduates have successfully obtained GNWT positions in Fort Smith, Hay River, Inuvik and Yellowknife.
