Developing the 2013 Northwest Territories Energy Plan

Communiqués de presse

YELLOWKNIFE (November 5, 2012) – The Government of the Northwest Territories has released a public discussion paper as part of a multi-step process to develop the 2013 Northwest Territories Energy Plan.

Entitled A Vision for Energy in the Northwest Territories: Developing the 2013 Northwest Territories Energy Plan, lays out five questions concerning energy supply and management issues on which the GNWT requires broad input. The public is invited to download the document at www.nwtenergy.ca and submit their comments at any time up to December 15, 2012.

In addition, the GNWT has posted a short online survey asking Northwest Territories residents to think about their values and to help prioritize the GNWT’s energy objectives.

Also as part of the development of the overall NWT Energy Plan, the GNWT will host an Energy Charrette from November 20-23 in Yellowknife. A collaborative stakeholder engagement and policy development event, it will include representatives from community and Aboriginal governments, energy utilities, the federal and territorial government, non-government organizations and experts in the field of energy. Delegates will examine the five questions posed in the discussion paper in detail.

During the Charrette, two public sessions (November 20th and 22nd) will also provide NWT residents the opportunity to offer input and interact with Charrette participants.

“I am confident that our collaborative approach, focusing on stakeholder engagement and a transparent policy development process, will serve to reinvigorate the economic potential of the energy sector and contribute to sustainable and reliable energy systems for all of the Territory’s 33 communities,” said Minister Ramsay.

The 2013 NWT Energy Plan will lay out the energy vision and policies of the GNWT, as well as provide details on spending initiatives and government priorities. The final plan will be completed by Spring of 2013.

Developing responsible energy solutions responds directly to the 17th Assembly’s goals of building a diversified economy and having an environment that will sustain present and future generations.
