YELLOWKNIFE (June 29, 2012) – Seven NWT schools are receiving certificates and cash awards for producing videos that promoted healthy eating and healthy lifestyles:

  • Mackenzie Mountain School, Norman Wells

  • Weledeh Catholic School, Yellowknife

  • Kaw Tay Whee School, Dettah

  • École J.H. Sissons School, Yellowknife

  • William MacDonald School, Yellowknife

  • Joseph Burr Tyrrell School, Fort Smith

  • Thomas Simpson School, Fort Simpson

  •

“Congratulations to all the winners as well as everyone who participated in the campaign this year,” said Tom Beaulieu, Minister of Health and Social Services. “I can tell that many hours of hard work went into making these videos, and I am pleased to acknowledge their efforts. They have interesting, insightful, and funny messages.”

This year’s tri-territorial Drop the Pop campaign, Spread the Word, encouraged schools and students to ‘spread the word’ about the harmful effects of sweetened beverages. In addition to the video contest, 39 schools received funding to participate in healthy-eating activities in 2012.

Drop the Pop is an investment in prevention, education and awareness, one of the priorities of the 17th Legislative Assembly, and promotes healthy eating as part of the Healthy Choices Framework
