YELLOWKNIFE (Thursday, February 23, 2012) – The Government of Canada’s Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) has approved significant new funds for adult education in the Northwest Territories as part of a five-year Pan-Territorial project.
“Education is a lifelong process and is key to our success as a territory,” said the Honourable Jackson Lafferty, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE). “The Department of Education, Culture and Employment invests in and provides education opportunities for adult learners at all levels. We are committed to ensuring that our residents have the opportunities they need to achieve their education and training goals in order to lead successful and prosperous lives.”
The enhanced funding for the NWT will allow for expanded adult basic education programming and supports. ECE provides $5 million annually to Aurora College to deliver Adult Literacy and Basic Education in the Northwest Territories. ECE also provides additional funding to various non-government organizations including the NWT Literacy Council, the Native Women’s Association and the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre to provide educational opportunities for NWT adults.
“Adult basic education opens doors to self-reliance, stronger families and improved citizenship. It lays the foundation for success in building a strong workforce and healthy communities,” said Aurora College Interim Board Chair, Sydney O’Sullivan. “Funding provided by CanNor will allow Aurora College to improve its delivery of adult basic education, as well as develop new programs to better serve students.”
