INUVIK (April 8, 2014) – Members of Cabinet of the 17th Legislative Assembly and the Gwich’in Tribal Council (GTC) Board of Directors met in Inuvik at the Alex Moses Greenland Building on April 8. This was the fourth meeting of the Gwich’in Tribal Council and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) since the signing of the intergovernmental agreement between the two governments on October 13, 2012.

The GNWT and GTC signed the terms of reference for the Capacity Building Framework at the meeting, in furtherance of the Memorandum of Intent entered into at the December 20113 GTC-GNWT bilateral meeting. The GTC and GNWT will continue to work to design and implement the framework to enhance human capacity. This would include opportunities for internships, transfer assignments, secondments and other developmental tools to facilitate capacity building and enhance understanding and engagement between the two organizations.

The meeting focused on areas of mutual interest, including:

  • Ferry services at the Tsiigehtchic Ferry Crossing
  • Contracting opportunities in the Gwich’in Settlement Area
  • Development of Gwich’in Parks
  • Continued work on the Capacity Building Framework

The Umbrella Intergovernmental Agreement regarding Intergovernmental Cooperation and Coordination recognizes the importance of the government-to-government relationship between the Gwich’in Tribal Council and the GNWT. It commits both governments to meet twice per year. The last meeting between the two governments took place in Yellowknife on December 10, 2013.
