HAY RIVER (November 28, 2012) – An intergovernmental agreement has been signed between the Northwest Territory Métis Nation (NWTMN) and Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) as part of 2012 NWTMN Annual General Assembly activities.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the Northwest Territories Metis Nation and the Government of the Northwest Territories allows the two governments to re-affirm and continue to build on their government-to-government relationship. It focuses on promotion of cooperation, information sharing and regular meetings. The MOU was developed between the two governments during meetings held this past April with the intent of signing during the Annual General Assembly.
“The Northwest Territory Métis Nation is pleased to build upon its ongoing government-to-government relationship with the GNWT through the MOU. The MOU will foster collaboration between our governments to maximize benefits and services to Northern residents,” said NWT Métis Nation President Betty Villebrun.
“The NWT Metis Nation had specific interests in enhancing our shared working relationship, and these are supported through this Memorandum of Understanding. It is a tangible example of the work we are doing to strengthen our relationships with Aboriginal governments,” added Premier Bob McLeod.
Working with Aboriginal governments that are interested in formalizing intergovernmental relations through the development of cooperation accords is one of the commitments of Respect, Recognition, Responsibility – the Government of the Northwest Territories’ Approach to Engaging with Aboriginal Governments and helps to advance the 17th Legislative Assembly’s goal of a strong and independent north built on partnerships.
