Learning and Development Initiatives Enhance Public Service Capacity

Yellowknife (March 13, 2014) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has implemented a number of new learning and development initiatives for employees Minister of Human Resources Tom Beaulieu announced today. These new initiatives complement the initiatives already in place for GNWT employees.

“The GNWT values lifelong learning for its employees and supports a competent and well trained public service,” said Minister Beaulieu. “We strive to provide employees with access to learning and development opportunities that sustain their ability to effectively and efficiently deliver departmental mandates to serve the people of the Northwest Territories.”

A new Learning and Development Policy provides the overall framework. It identifies learning and development opportunities consistent with employees’ job functions, career aspirations and learning and development plans. It also identifies when mandatory training may be required. The Leadership Development Program continues to provide an academic perspective on leadership in the public service and includes competencies needed in the GNWT work force. A new Management Training series features a mix of mandatory and elective courses specific to the GNWT’s legislative, human resources, policy and financial framework and skills needed to perform management duties.

Effective and efficient government is one of the goals the 17th Legislative Assembly. The GNWT continues to ensure employees have opportunities for learning and development to support their professional development, perform their job functions and to continue to provide programs and services to the people of the Northwest Territories consistent with the Government’s priorities and objectives.
