YELLOWKNIFE (June 29, 2012) – The 2012 Federal – Provincial / Territorial Ministers of Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Conference was held in Inuvik, June 26 to 28. Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), expressed his appreciation to the delegates from all across Canada for traveling to the Beaufort Delta to attend. Minister McLeod also thanked representatives from the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, the Gwich’in Tribal Council and the Town of Inuvik for assisting with the event.
“I greatly appreciated the opportunity to showcase Inuvik and the Beaufort Delta to my colleagues from across Canada,” said McLeod. “We made some important decisions related to the approval of the new Canadian Sport Policy in Inuvik. I was particularly pleased that 10 years after the first policy was approved in Iqaluit in 2002, we returned north to put a renewed focus on the importance of sport for all Canadians.”
The conference also provided an opportunity for fifteen volunteer youth who were in Inuvik as part of the NWT Youth Ambassadors Program, a leadership development initiative of the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs. Minister McLeod thanked the Youth Ambassadors for the invaluable service they provided to all of the delegates.
The Ministers of Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation also approved items related to after school physical activity, healthy weights and the National Recreation Summit. Details on these items are outlined in the joint communiqué.
Working with federal, provincial, and territorial governments to improve sport and recreation opportunities for Northerners will result in a strong north built on partnerships and healthy, educated people free from poverty as envisioned by the 17th Assembly of the Government of the Northwest Territories.
