YELLOWKNIFE (September 24, 2012) – September 23rd to 29th is Literacy Week in the Northwest Territories.
The Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), the NWT Literacy Council and local communities are sponsoring events and activities across our territory to highlight the importance of literacy to NWT residents.
“Literacy today is not just knowing how to read and write, but includes a wide range of communication and comprehension skills in one or more of our eleven official languages,” said Jackson Lafferty, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment. “These are skills all NWT residents need to make informed choices, lead productive lives and contribute to a strong and prosperous society.”
Reading text, using documents, writing, oral communication, numeracy, thinking skills, computer use and lifelong learning are all part of literacy.
Highlights of this year’s celebrations include tomorrow’s presentation of the Council of the Federation and NWT Ministerial Literacy awards at the annual Adult Learners’ Luncheon and Wednesday’s ‘Read on the Street’, part of the Read for 15 Challenge between the NWT and Nunavut, in Yellowknife.
Residents across the North are encouraged to watch for posters and announcements on how to participate in these and other local Literacy Week events.
