YELLOWKNIFE (August 31, 2012) – Premier Bob McLeod met with Dehcho First Nations Grand Chief Herb Norwegian on August 27. This was the first meeting between the two government leaders since Grand Chief Norwegian’s election in June. The agenda included devolution, the Wildlife Act, land use, and the flood in Nahanni Butte.
“This was a productive meeting that set the tone for our continued government-to-government relationship and work toward a united and prosperous Northwest Territories,” said Premier McLeod. “We can listen to each other in the spirit of respect, recognition and responsibility, and we can work together in the best interests of all of our people. The territorial government will continue to recognize and respect the constitutionally protected rights and treaty rights of Aboriginal peoples, as well as existing Aboriginal rights agreements.”
"The moment has arrived to a make a deal on crucial issues so that we can all move on with our lives," said Grand Chief Herb Norwegian.
The 17th Legislative Assembly met as a caucus at Cli Lake near Fort Simpson from August 26-29, 2012. The Assembly’s priorities are outlined under the theme Believing in People and Building on the Strengths of Northerners. A strong relationship between the territorial, Aboriginal and local governments will build a sustainable future for the Dehcho region and the rest of the territory. The GNWT and Dehcho First Nations share a vision of strong individuals, families and communities sharing the benefits and responsibilities of a unified, environmentally sustainable and prosperous Northwest Territories. Both governments are committed to self-government and sustainable economic development while maintaining the integrity of the land and Aboriginal traditions.
