April 26, 2011 - The Premiers of Canada’s three Territories will meet in Yellowknife this week to discuss shared opportunities and interests at the 9th annual Northern Premiers’ Forum.
The Northern Premiers’ Forum has formalized a long history of cooperation and partnership, and provides an opportunity for the territorial premiers to develop northern solutions to issues of common concern. The increasing international attention on the circumpolar world, and the economic, environmental and political significance of Canada’s North, highlight the importance of finding ways for the territories to work together.
During the Forum, Northwest Territories Premier Floyd K. Roland, Yukon Premier Dennis Fentie, and Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak will discuss a number of issues of importance to northerners including:
- Circumpolar issues;
- Health promotion;
- Northern housing;
- Policing in the North; and
- Northern infrastructure.
Canada’s Northern premiers will be releasing two pan-territorial papers: a climate change adaptation strategy and a renewable energy inventory. These papers articulate and expand on the priorities outlined in the Northern Vision document which was released by the territorial premiers in 2007.
Members of the media are invited to a press conference at the conclusion of the Forum:
