Role of Economic Opportunities Strategy (EOS) Governance Committee Extended

YELLOWKNIFE (February 13, 2014) – Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment David Ramsay is extending the role of the partnership that developed the NWT Economic Opportunities Strategy.

“As we put the Economic Opportunities Strategy into action, the partners will oversee the process and play a vital role in ensuring actions are timely and publically-accountable,” said Minister Ramsay. “The Government of the Northwest Territories is committed to fully addressing the Strategy’s 117 recommended actions.”

The partnership is made up of the NWT’s primary economic stakeholders: the NWT Chamber of Commerce, the NWT Association of Communities, the Northern Aboriginal Business Association, Canada’s Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and the Government of the Northwest Territories Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment. This group formed the EOS Governance Committee, who conducted extensive consultations with NWT residents and organizations and used this input to prepare the Economic Opportunities Strategy.

The Governance Committee will monitor and report on projects and initiatives designed to put the Strategy’s recommended actions in place to ensure they are coordinated, on target and effective.

The GNWT is now developing a plan to implement the EOS recommendations and Minister Ramsay notes that individual partners represented by the Governance Committee continue to have an important role. “Our Strategy is built on the premise that our businesses, industries and governments have a leadership role to play in moving our economy forward,” he said. “We are going to be working directly with our partners to implement these actions and actively seek their input and advice on the best ways to move forward.”

The EOS Website and Facebook page have been redesigned as a resource and portal for the partners to communicate initiatives, updates and information regarding the ongoing implementation of the Strategy.

The completion of the NWT Economic Opportunities Strategy last year fulfilled a stated priority of the 17th Legislative Assembly to develop a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable economic development strategy. Its development and planned implementation reflect the GNWT’s commitment to build a stronger north built on partnerships.
