YELLOWKNIFE (June 11, 2014) – I was deeply saddened today to learn of the loss of Robert Alexie Jr., President of the Gwich’in Tribal Council.
President Alexie was a strong leader who helped shape the political landscape of Northwest Territories through his important work on the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement and the NWT Devolution Agreement. His support of devolution was extremely valuable in helping us achieve that important milestone.
President Alexie was a quiet leader who believed in the value of building relationships and was committed to engaging and supporting Gwich’in youth. There were many sides to his personality. As a celebrated writer, poet, musician and photographer he made significant contributions to the cultural life of the Northwest Territories, in addition to his role as a political leader.
I will miss his friendship, as well as the perspectives and sensitivity that he brought to any discussion. My thoughts and prayers are with President Alexie’s family and I wish to extend my sincerest condolences to them, his friends, the Gwich’in people and the people of the Delta during this difficult time.
