YELLOWKNIFE (February 14, 2013) – Members of the Executive Councils of the Tłįchǫ Government and the 17th Legislative Assembly met bilaterally on Friday, February 8th. This was the third meeting between the two Executives and reflects the continuing development of their government-to-government relationship and commitment to working collaboratively on behalf of the Tłįchǫ people and all residents of the Northwest Territories.
Areas of discussion included:
- The collaborative renewal of the Intergovernmental Services Agreement
- The collaborative approach taken towards seeking amendments to the Tłįchǫ Community Government Act to reflect the needs of the four Tłįchǫ Community Governments and their residents
- Northwest Territories Education Renewal
- The continued collaboration with and contribution of the Tłîchô Government on the proposed new Wildlife Act
These formal government-to-government meetings are part of the shared commitments within ‘Working Together – the Tłįchǫ Government/Government of the Northwest Territories Intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding’. Members of the Executive Councils of the 17th Assembly and Tłįchǫ Government have committed to meet bilaterally twice per year. The last meeting was held June 29, 2012.
“I feel that there has been a real benefit to the residents of the Tłįchǫ and the Northwest Territories in meeting regularly this way,” said Premier Bob McLeod. “We have a clearer understanding of our shared interests and are better equipped to find solutions.”
Grand Chief Eddie Erasmus said, “It was a short but useful meeting. Our Governments discussed a number of common issues. The Tłįchǫ̨ Government needs to work with the GNWT to support the implementation of our Tłįchǫ̨ Agreement, and I want to thank the Premier for the honest and frank discussions about the needs of each government.”
