Together We Can Stop Elder Abuse – World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15th, 2011

Communiqués de presse

June 14, 2011 - June 15th, 2011 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and the Department of Health and Social Services wants residents of the NWT to be aware that abuse against older adults can come in the form of financial, emotional or physical.

Through its ongoing campaign, Together We Can Stop Elder Abuse, the Department is encouraging residents to speak up about abuse.  The campaign is intended to raise awareness and provide information on elder abuse in the NWT.

“People should always speak up when they see or experience abuse,” said J. Michael Miltenberger, Minister of Health and Social Services.

“No one should feel alone or powerless against abuse, especially vulnerable people like our seniors and elders. There is help available,” said Minister Miltenberger.

Seniors and Elders are among the fastest growing segment of the NWT population and are valued for the wisdom and service they provide by volunteering and remaining active within their communities.

Goals and priorities of the Department of Health and Social Services Action Plan, “A Foundation for Change” include increasing supports and services for people who experience family violence.
