YELLOWKNIFE (November 15, 2012) - The fur advance and prime fur bonus payments for selected species have been increased for this season’s trapping season.
“Last season’s wild fur harvests were record-setting and we anticipate our NWT trappers will have another great season this year,” said Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment David Ramsay. “By increasing payments to trappers, we are encouraging them to have another productive season so their families and communities continue to benefit.”
Increases are being made both to stimulate production to meet increased demand and to improve harvest data.
The Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur (GMVF) Program provides trappers with advances on harvests that are shipped to auction. Advances include: coloured fox – from $25 to $30/pelt; white fox - $25 to $35/pelt; muskrat - $4 to $5/pelt; and grizzly bear - $250 to $500/pelt.
A prime fur bonus is paid out on all fur that sells for the advanced amount or greater. New bonuses this year include: beaver – from $20 to $25/pelt; wolverine $50 to $100; and grizzly bear from $50 to $450/pelt.
By actively supporting the harvesting and marketing of wild fur through the GMVF Program, the GNWT is taking action to diversify the economy and provide all communities and regions with opportunities and choices, key goals of the 17th Legislative Assembly.
