Communiqués de presse

YELLOWKNIFE (June 6, 2012) – Today the Honourable Robert C. McLeod, Minister Responsible for Youth, released a report that profiles youth programs that took place in the NWT during the United Nations International Year of Youth, 2010-11.

“Youth across the NWT need to be supported and celebrated for their unique contributions to our communities,” said Minister McLeod. “This report showcases some of the unique ways they add creative and valuable insight to their communities. These programs help youth to develop meaningful skills, and will ensure a sustainable, vibrant, and safe future for the NWT.”

The programs were all supported by the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs, and included elder and youth forums, traditional knowledge camps, sporting events, and ongoing youth development programs like the NWT Youth Ambassador Program.

The report is available online at http://www.maca.gov.nt.ca/.

The United Nations General Assembly recognized 2010-2011 as the International Year of Youth, with a focus on dialogue and mutual understanding. This celebration coincided with the 25th anniversary of the original International Youth year in 1985 and recognized the importance of youth development and meaningful participation in all aspects of society.

Supporting youth in our communities is an important step in ensuring the NWT has healthy, educated people free from poverty. It also builds sustainable, vibrant, and safe communities across the territory, as envisioned in the 17th Assembly’s priorities as outlined in Believing in Our People and Building on the Strengths of Northerners.
