YELLOWKNIFE (May 27, 2013) – The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment released the Prelude Management Plan (PMP) today. The Plan will improve users’ enjoyment of Prelude Lake Territorial Park and address specific issues arising from its increased popularity.
“Prelude has always offered a great camping experience and is one of the most popular parks in the Northwest Territories,” said Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment David Ramsay. “And now that we have received input from the community, we look forward to making changes that will make that experience even better.”
The PMP addresses some of the major concerns that can affect park users’ enjoyment, including: parking space, all-terrain vehicle use, marina congestion and the need for additional camping space.
During the Plan’s development, the Department engaged with the public through a series of facilitated workshops and an online survey. All public consultation documents can be found online.
In response to concerns from park users, ITI will be increasing the number of parking spots at the marina and has launched an expansion project that will roughly double parking availability by 2014. Other initiatives that have already been completed include the installation of bear-proof garbage bins and the hiring of more patrol officers for the 2013 summer season. Issues raised by park users concerning ATV use are also being addressed.
Future plans include building a new marina complex and docking structures and improving the landscape of the beach to create more usable space
By providing support to improve NWT parks and campgrounds, the GNWT is promoting tourism in the Northwest Territories and helping to meet the 17th Legislative Assembly’s priority for a strong, diversified economy.
