Be Water Smart - Another Healthy Choice

Communiqués de presse

YELLOWKNIFE (July 4, 2013) – With summer upon us, Northwest Territories (NWT) residents are reminded to be safe by being water smart.

For those who are going out on the water, this means ensuring that every passenger in the boat is wearing an approved lifejacket that fits properly. It also means making the choice to boat sober. The penalties for impaired boating are the same as for impaired driving.

Minister David Ramsay says the Department of Transportation takes the problem of impaired operation of any vessel very seriously. “We will apply all the tools available to us, including the suspension of the drivers licence, to deal with any impaired boating, at any time, “ he said. “It’s simply not worth your life and the lives of your family and friends to boat while impaired.”

More information about how to be safe while on or near the NWT’s waterways can be found on the Department of Transportation website.
