(September 19, 2013) - I am pleased to be here to show the Government of the Northwest Territories support for the United Way and to encourage everyone here to get involved in making your community a safe, healthy place for all of our families. Children with a good start are less likely to fall behind in school and get in trouble with the law. They grow up to be healthy adults who are less likely to live in poverty or have issues with addictions.
Our government shares the United Way’s goal of building a strong, healthy community for all. The United Way’s commitment to real change is proven to take people from poverty to possibility. It works. We see the benefits throughout our territory.
Government of the Northwest Territories staff can contribute to the United Way through payroll deductions. It is an easy way to support a number of charities all at once and do a lot of good throughout the territory. The United Way funds programs that maximize impact on the community and demonstrate partnerships among agencies. When you give money to the United Way, you see the benefits of your donation.
Volunteerism plays an important role in developing our communities and creating strong bonds between communities. When you volunteer with the United Way, you are part of a team that gives back. I want to thank the Government of the Northwest Territories employees who organize workplace campaigns in our offices throughout the territory. I encourage everyone here to consider how you can make a difference.
Let us get it right from the start. Let us support our kids to grow up to be strong, healthy adults with healthy children of their own. This is a shared responsibility. Together, we need to build a network of extended family and community members to help our children grow. There is so much we can do. I encourage you to show your support and see what change is possible.
