Intergovernmental Meeting between NWT Métis Nation and GNWT

Communiqué

YELLOWKNIFE (September 25, 2015) – Members of Cabinet of the 17th Legislative Assembly and the NWT Métis Nation (NWTMN) met in Yellowknife on September 23, 2015. 

During the meeting the parties agreed to undertake:

  • Evaluating how the Wellness Program funding is distributed in the community of Fort Resolution
  • Continued discussion on the decline of the caribou, including issues related to management plans, survey results, tags and predation
  • Continued discussions on the proposed Thaidene Nene Territorial Park and conservation area
  • Work with the community of Fort Resolution to review Economic Development program delivery
  • Review the Market Disruption Policy and its impact on economic opportunities in communities with limited competition
  • Continue discussions on housing issues (including market housing, home repairs and home ownership)
  • Share information on Athabasca Denesuline overlap.

The meeting also focused on areas of mutual interest, including:

  • Blue Cross Health Benefits
  • Highway Paving Update
  • GNWT Hiring Practices
  • Cabin Taxation
  • Land and Resources Negotiation Issues
  • North Slave Metis Alliance
  • Murdered and Missing Aboriginal Women and Girls
  • Aboriginal Children in Care

The Memorandum of Understanding recognizes the importance of the government-to-government relationship between the NWTMN and the GNWT. It commits both governments to meet regularly. This was the third meeting of the NWTMN and the GNWT since they signed an intergovernmental agreement on November 28, 2012.
