YELLOWKNIFE (October 5, 2015) – Each year during National Fire Prevention Week, the Honourable Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, recognizes members of the NWT Fire Service for their work in protecting our families and homes from the threat of fire by awarding the annual Fire Service Merit Awards.

“Recognizing these individuals and fire departments helps us to say ‘Thank you’ to the men and women of the NWT fire service,” said Minister McLeod. “All firefighters in the NWT provide a critical and selfless service to their communities and help to protect lives and property across our territory.”

NWT Fire Service Merit Awards are awarded based on nominations from community members and fire chiefs, to honour and recognize individuals and community fire departments for their significant contribution to fire safety and service across the territory.

The 2015 award recipients are:

  • Jim Sawkins – Fire Chief of the Inuvik Fire Department and President of the
    NWT Fire Chief’s Association
  • Sherry Beard – Fire Chief of the Yellowknife Airport Fire Department
  • Bradley King – Volunteer Firefighter at the Fort Resolution Fire Department
  • The Fort Simpson Fire Department

Recognizing the contributions and achievements of fire fighters is an important part of promoting and recognizing the NWT fire service as they provide vital education and protection services that contribute to sustainable, vibrant, and safe communities as outlined in the 17th Assembly’s vision of Believing in People and Building on the Strengths of Northerners.
