BEIJING, CHINA (January 15, 2016) — The Government of the Northwest Territories’ Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur brand is being represented and promoted this week at one of the fur industry’s largest trade shows.
The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) is in attendance at the Beijing Leather and Fur Products Show from January 12th to 15th to heighten awareness and demand for our region’s wild fur in the Chinese fashion market place and ensure the interests of the Northwest Territories (NWT) fur industry are represented and protected.
“Our attendance at the show is just one of many steps taken by the department to confirm our continued dedication to the Asian market,” says Minister of ITI Bob McLeod. “Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur is recognized as the finest wild fur in the world and widely sought by the Asian fashion industry – among other global buyers.”
Because of its high quality, limited supply and the sustainable and humane manner in which it is harvested, NWT wild fur and the products made with it are a growing attraction for the socially and fashion-conscious consumer.
Also on the agenda this week, are meetings with key clients looking to become regular buyers at the Canada’s Fur Harvester Auction and meetings with the International Fur Federation — the governing body of fur producing nations.
Minister McLeod has led successful trade missions to China and Japan in recent years. The marketing of the NWT’s wild fur within the Asian market is a recognized area of potential growth and diversity for the NWT’s grass roots economy and serves to sustain traditional harvesters in the NWT.
China is the largest importer of fur in the world and represents over 80 percent of fur-related purchases, manufacturing and re-exporting of finished products globally.
