Job Information
The Community Mental Health Nurse provides community-based mental health and substance use nursing services to residents of Inuvik and the Beaufort Delta Region. The role includes case management, mental health assessments, medication support, crisis intervention, and care planning.
Working within an interdisciplinary team, the nurse collaborates with primary care, acute care, psychiatry, the Opioid Recovery Program, and community partners to deliver coordinated, culturally safe, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented care. This position supports clients to remain stable in their communities and promotes wellness, independence, and access to services.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive community mental health and substance use nursing services
- Act as a case manager for clients with complex mental health and substance use needs
- Conduct mental health assessments, triage, referrals, and care planning
- Administer and monitor psychiatric medications
- Provide crisis intervention and support for urgent mental health situations
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and community partners to coordinate care
- Support clients transitioning between hospital, treatment facilities, and community care
- Advocate for client dignity, autonomy, and culturally safe care
- Deliver client and family education related to mental health, medications, and self-care
- Contribute to program development, quality improvement, and clinical consultation.
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
Baccalaureate degree in Psychiatric Nursing/Baccalaureate degree in Nursing (BN or BScN) is required. Completion of a post-graduate psychiatric nursing program, or additional mental health training from a recognized university or employer is an asset. A minimum of two (2) years of experience working directly or indirectly with moderate exposure with a Mental Health or Psychiatry population is required. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Additional Requirements
- Registration or eligibility for registration with the College and Association of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (CANNN)
- Proof of immunization in accordance with public health requirements
- Willingness to obtain required certifications and training within specified timeframes
Working Conditions
- Primarily Monday to Friday (8:30-17:00), with flexibility required to support community mental health needs
- Regular travel within the Beaufort Delta Region, including outreach to remote communities
- Work in client homes and community settings, with exposure to environmental, physical, and emotional demands

Labour Market Supplement
The successful incumbent will receive a $11,000 supplement upon hire and an additional $11,000 supplement after completion of 12 months of continuous employment contingent on remaining employed in an eligible position for a further 12 months. This is a taxable benefit and will be subject to applicable deductions.

Salary Information
The salary range for this position is from $59.62 per hour to $71.22 per hour (approximately $116,259 - $138,879) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $14,706.
