Job Information
Located on the Hay River Reserve, adjacent to the town of Hay River, and reporting to the 2 Billion Trees Coordinator, the Silviculture Forester is responsible to assure the design, delivery, and operational effectiveness of 2 Billion Trees projects in the NWT. The responsibilities of the Silviculture Forester are broad including silviculture project planning and management; financial management and accountability; and auditing, supervising, and participating in field projects.
The Silviculture Forester will be responsible to coordinate and execute project activities related to the 2 Billion Trees program including developing silviculture plans and schedules, advising on regulatory requirements for projects, developing silviculture prescriptions, planning and overseeing seed collection, coordinating seedling orders, planning or supervising tree planting and habitat restoration projects, managing contracts, providing feedback to contractors, and engaging with Indigenous partners. Field work is a substantial and mandatory part of this position.
Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of current silvicultural practices in Canada.
- Knowledge and understanding of boreal forest ecology, tree physiology, and silvicultural systems.
- Knowledge of and experience with tree planting projects including planning, seedling management, camp management, and planting.
- Problem-solving skills to develop and implement complex logistics, forest regeneration plans, silviculture treatments, and multi-year strategies.
- Ability to travel, do field work, and conduct field inspections.
Typically attained by
A degree in Forestry or a diploma in Forest Technology recognized by Forest Professional Regulators of Canada, and/ or a member in good standing of any of Canada¿s regulating bodies for Professional Foresters or Biologists, plus a minimum of three (3) years of silviculture experience. A Class 5 Driver's Licence is required.
Equivalencies may include;
- A degree in ecology, natural resources, or a related field, and four years of forestry experience, including 3 years of silviculture experience.
- A diploma in ecology, natural resources, or a related field, and five years of forestry experience, including 3 years of silviculture experience.

Travel
The incumbent in this position will be required to travel 12 - 16 weeks per year and is required to travel to attend community meetings with the 2BT Coordinator, approximately 8 times per year.

Salary Information
The salary range for this position is from $56.99 per hour to $68.06 per hour (approximately $111,131 to $132,717.) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $5,662.
