The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant (1-Year Term) to join the team at Inuvik Regional Hospital in the Beaufort Delta Region. Reporting to the Manager of Allied Health Services, the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) collects, processes, organizes, and distributes biological and environmental samples following established laboratory standards and international best practices. The MLA helps physicians and other health care professionals by ensuring samples are collected accurately and on time, performing point-of-care tests, preparing specimens, and sending samples to referral laboratories. The laboratory serves Inuvik and 12 nearby communities, processing around 20,000 samples each year.

The MLA works in the specimen receiving and core laboratory areas and helps ensure a steady flow of patients, samples, and results through the lab. Duties include collecting blood samples from adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients; entering and checking specimens in the Laboratory Information System; preparing and packaging samples for shipment following Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations; cleaning, monitoring, and maintaining laboratory equipment; and providing professional and respectful service to patients and health care staff. The role involves regular exposure to infectious materials, standing for long periods, lifting and moving supplies, and remaining calm and professional in a fast-paced and sometimes emotionally challenging environment. A criminal records check and proof of immunization are required.

To be successful in this role, typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
A recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program at a minimum of a certificate and registration with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Sciences (CSMLS) as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. Applicants without the required training or certification must have worked as a Medical Laboratory Assistant in a Canadian hospital medical laboratory and be able complete the CSMLS certification exam within two (2) years of indeterminate hire.
