Department Information

The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies.  INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information

The Apprentice Welder is based on the South shore of Great Slave Lake and will report to the Supervisor, Maintenance Facility while working under the direct supervision of the Journeyman tradesperson. As an Apprentice Welder you will provide support to ensure that all heavy and light mobile and fixed equipment that is used for maintaining the department's infrastructure, is repaired, reconditioned and maintained in a timely, efficient, dependable, and orderly manner, in accordance with current codes, specifications and departmental policy and procedures.

The Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for this position are:
Technical: 

  • Knowledge of standard metal fabrications repair methods, tools, equipment, and techniques; 
  • Knowledge of all equipment, from heavy to light, mobile equipment to stationary units such as generator sets.
  • Ability to modify and fabricate component repairs to light and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to interpret diagrams and specifications.

Communication:

  • Ability to complete written estimates, shop repair orders, condition reports and other reports associated with equipment service and repair. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor and clients to perform the required work.
  • Ability to understand apprenticeship theory, training and interpret service , repair and parts manuals.

The above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities are typically attained by:

  • Minimum Grade 12 Education.
  • Successful completion of the Trade Entrance Exam.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license.

Salary Information

The salary for this position starts at 70% of Pay Grade 13 - $33.18 per hour (approximately $69014.4 per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $5,662
* Apprentice rates will be based on a percentage of step one of the appropriate pay rate, based on their year of the apprenticeship as follows:
Four Year Training Programs
Year 1     70%
Year 2     80%
Year 3     90%
