Job Information

The Relief Cook works within Northwest Territories Corrections to provide food services in a secure facility, following departmental guidelines and operational standards. The role supports the safe custody, rehabilitation, and reintegration of individuals in custody. Reporting to the Food Services Supervisor, the Relief Cook prepares meals for up to 50 people and supervises inmate work crews, including assisting with apprenticeship training programs. 

The Relief Cook also helps train new staff, ensures policies and procedures are followed, and operates as a Peace Officer while on duty, Work is directed by legislation (Federal-Corrections Conditional Release Act, Corrections Conditional Release Act, Prison and Reformatories Act, Criminal Code of Canada, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Youth Justice Act, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Territorial GNWT Corrections Act, Corrections Regulations, Public Service Act, Access to Information Privacy Protection Act); and specific policies (Corrections Service Directives, Territorial Safety Acts and Legislation and the HR Manual).

Key responsibilities:

  • Facilitates the delivery of food services to staff and inmates.
  • Provides safe and secure custody of inmates within the facility to ensure the safety of society, inmates and staff.
  • Provides direction to staff and inmates to contribute towards an effective, efficient and motivated working environment.

Key qualifications:

  • Provincial Journeyman certificate in cooking, food safe certification and two (2) years of related experience. 
  • First Aid and CPR certified 
  • Class 5 Driver License

This job opening is for a Relief position where there are no established hours of work on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and may be required to report to work on an as and when required basis for facilities where services operate on a daily basis throughout the entire year.

Salary Information

The salary for this position starts at $42.17 per hour (approximately $87,713. per annum) plus a pro-rated annual Northern Allowance of $3.50 per hour.
