Department Information

The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies.  INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information

This position reports to the Highway Maintenance Supervisor. The position works out of a Highway Maintenance Facility responsible for the maintenance of highways, access roads and the construction and maintenance of ice and winter roads. Occasionally you may be required to assist with highway maintenance operations in areas other than its home base. The primary clients are the users of the transportation system.

You will be required to work a seven days on/seven days off shift rotation for approximately six months during the winter maintenance season to ensure continuous coverage and timely response to winter road conditions.

This position is designated as part of the organization's Operational Requirement framework, which includes Essential and Critical Staff roles to ensure highway maintenance and safety.

Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities.

  • Knowledge of and skill in the servicing and minor repair of heavy trucks and equipment to maintain the reliability of the vehicles and to ensure the expected useable life of the machinery is attained.
  • Ability to work without supervision using specialized technical skills and knowledge to make rational and reasonable decisions in the effective use of labor, equipment and materials for highway maintenance purposes and avoidance of situations that can result in property loss and damage or personal injury.
  • Ability to communicate in English verbally to ensure accuracy and understanding of messages given and received using mobile two-way radio communications.
  • Ability to commit to actively upholding and consistently practicing personal diversity, inclusion and cultural awareness, as well as safety and sensitivity approaches in the workplace.

Typically attained by.

  • A grade 10 education and:  Three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment in highway and community environments where public traffic is present, which includes: Two (2) years' operating 3- and 5-axle tandem trucks, graders and wheeled loaders, One (1) year operating Class 1 vehicles and excavators, and, Two (2) years performing minor servicing and maintenance on equipment.
  • A valid class 1 driver's license at time of hire.  Ability to attain WHMIS Certification within 3 months of hire.  Ability to attain First Aid and CPR certification within 3 months of hire.

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Salary Information

The salary range for this position is from $42.17 per hour to $50.36 per hour (approximately $82,232 - $98,202). plus an annual Northern Allowance of $5,536.
