The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies.  INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information

The Maintenance Administrator (Fort Smith) oversees the operation, maintenance, and repair of approximately 120 government-owned buildings and a fleet of 18 vehicles.

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the role is responsible for planning, scheduling, monitoring, and reporting on all maintenance activities to ensure assets are safe, reliable, compliant with codes and regulations, and maintained according to GNWT standards. The position uses a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to manage preventative, scheduled, mandatory, and discretionary maintenance work.

The Administrator coordinates about 9,000 hours of trade work annually, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, general maintenance, security systems, locksmith services, and snow removal. They work with minimal supervision, set priorities independently, and consult the Facilities Manager on sensitive or high-profile issues.

The role manages approximately $2.7 million annually in operations and maintenance budgets, with $50,000 in spending authority, and provides guidance and direction to departmental staff, local labor, and contractors to ensure effective service delivery and lifecycle value of government assets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plans and coordinates maintenance and repairs of all operations and maintenance work on buildings in the Fort Smith Area.
  • Delivers maintenance and minor construction projects in the carpentry, painting, plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and other specialty trade areas as part of the implementation of the annual work plan.
  • Develops yearly work plans for all operation and maintenance for all assets in the Fort Smith Area.
  • Provides advice and support to Project Officers, the Facilities Manager, and contractors on maintenance and repair of work related to their trade and from historical data available in Web Works.
  • Uses the Web Works CMMS to plan, schedule, monitor and report on work.
  • Provides regional spill contingency coordination and is the regional asbestos coordinator.
  • Undertakes a variety of other maintenance related support functions.

Key Qualifications: 

The completion of a Journeyperson Certification in one of the building trade; a Diploma in Computer Technology or Building Technology; or a Certificate in Maintenance Management, enhanced by a minimum of 2 years of experience in trades and a maintenance background on commercial type assets.

Requires a valid Class 5 NWT Driver's license to operate motor vehicles.
