Department Information

The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies.  INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information

This position provides expert architectural/structural technical guidance and advice to Department of Infrastructure staff, municipalities, program departments, regulatory bodies (i.e. Office of the Fire Marshal, Electrical/Mechanical Safety Section, Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission, etc.) and boards and agencies including industry associations. 

Reporting to the Manager, Facilities Design & Technical Services, the Senior Technical Officer provides technically advanced services for buildings owned or leased by the GNWT.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of buildings and specialized knowledge of building systems, sub-systems and components specific to architectural including an understanding of how these interact with each other;
  • Ability to interpret technical architectural and structural designs and judge the appropriateness of such designs for conditions in a cold climate;
  • Ability to read, comprehend, interpret and apply building codes, standards and regulations (i.e., CSA, NFC, Energy Code, NBC, NPC, NFPA, etc.).

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

A Degree in Architecture or related field plus three years of relevant experience, including two years' experience in a cold climate environment.
